I take this knowledge and apply it to note reading: I introduce reading by distance as well as recognition. I can usually have student reading simple music in the first two lessons. I typically begin the lesson asking the student how their practice went for them, allowing them to communicate their successes and struggles from the previous week's practice. We then set some attainable goals for the lesson, and the student then shows off whatever they worked on that week.
