I teach my students to use their ears to guide them through learning. I give them the ability to experiment and work outside the box. In my experience, this has lead to far greater musicianship rather than strictly focusing on sheet music. On the other hand, music theory plays a role as well. My teaching style is based on the wants and needs of the individual student. There are some concepts that are universal. There are also instruments that require more strict adherence to certain techniques. (Orchestral string instruments playing classical music is a perfect example.)
