I work with Rubank or any method books provided by their band instructor. There will be supplemental materials, especially for more advanced students, that are instrument specific such as etudes and technical exercises. We will continue focusing on band literature, contemporary, classical, or solo literature depending on the goals of the students and their interests. I have over 30 years of teaching experience. I began teaching Music right out of college, instrumental, vocal and general music classes. As a Pastor I still directed musicals and I taught drumers how to play drumset and required them to play for my ministry once they were good enough. I spent many years making my living at teaching instrumental music privately in schools around the area I was pastoring. I like to start beginning students with the Rubank Elementary series of books. Along with the Rubank books, I like to also focus on music being covered in school, if applicable. For more advanced students, I focus on the mastery of scales, technique, intonation, and sound production. I like to use the Andersen etude series, but this will vary from student to student. For piano students I highly recommend the Alfreds books for beginners. After you have some background we can work with the music of your choice, classical, jazz, pop, RnB etc. Some of my specialties include teaching people how to turn chord charts into music, how to improvise and how to use music theory to improve your understanding of music. For guitar I do not use any books as I find most guitar method books to be very old fashioned and not inviting to the student. Read More
