I am a fully-certified music educator of over 20 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 35 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. Using a metronome will help with students on building the rhythm foundation and once they get to a comfortable level with fundamentals I will have students bring in music that is a higher level to work on to keep their flute playing fun. I always encourage students to bring in any band music as well. I like to make out an adjustable "curriculum" to give to parents so they can also keep track of what the students will be working on each lesson or looking forward to if the student wants to prepare for the next lesson (based on ability). Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor's of Music degree in flute performance and am now working on my music therapy degree through the Saint Mary of the Woods Music Therapy Distance Equivalency program.
