For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson. Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire. Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with.
