For older students I pick method books more specific to their age, learning style, and progress while still focusing on key points of interest for the student. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has started to grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Playing the fundamentals must become like second nature as all the advance stages of playing and performing would always be difficult. For beginning students or children, I will start teaching the importance of note value on printed music. Whether it's drums, piano, guitar, or any orchestral instrument, they all share a common thread in melody and rhythm. Once the student has a firm grasp on note value and melody, they will begin to learn simple songs that gradually increase in difficulty. I like Faber and Faber piano adventures because they teach a lot like I do. I've been developing a power point and You Tube presentation to go along with the book for those students who need more visual stimulus. I like various curruiculum's with Trumpet and Brass players. I stay around the Trumpet players Bible using an Arban's book with some Clark exercises along with the students band book to help them not to form bad habits. Read More
