With beginners, I focus on the fundamentals like working out of George L. Stone's 'Stick Control' and introducing rudiments while focusing on overall technique. I also work out of a book called 'A Funky Primer', which is a drum set book that has hundreds of different beat combinations. Depending on how the student progresses and what their overall goals are, I eventually begin to introduce difference genres and styles and more complex and challenging approaches to the drum set. I am 29 years old and have been playing music since I was 9 and actively playing in bands since age 15. Starting with classic rock and blues, I slowly began to encompass a wide variety of styles into my playing, like funk and reggae. I graduated from Wake Forest University in 2013 and actively played jazz with the music program in addition to having an independent student band.
