What is taught is dependant on what the student currently needs. Most beginners I work with are using the Essential Elements book that they use at school. For older students I will utilize what the student is working on in school as well as determining weak areas that need to be addressed, and the areas the student might want to focus on (classical technique, jazz theory and playing, etc.). Additionally, I like to work with scales and long tones in a more advanced way, expanding the range of the instrument and tone quality as we prepare repertoire. With students interested in jazz, either as their primary course of study or in addition to classical music, we focus even more on scales and arpeggios, aiming to master first the most commonly used keys and then expanding to 12 key mastery. I like to begin with a play-along book like Jamey Aebersold's "Maiden Voyage", stressing the beginnings of improvisation, then moving on to more advanced tunes and chord progressions. Read More

I like to use the Rubank Elementary,Intermediate, and Advance method books depending on the skill level. I would say I focus on the fundamentals, embouchure, tone, air, technique, and etc. Having a strong basic will get the students to play anything they want in the long term. For example, having a strong correct embouchure is really important in playing the clarinet.
