GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY-1988 DEPARTMENTAL MUSIC AWARD: MOST OUTSTANDING MUSIC STUDENT 1989 DEPARTMENTAL MUSIC AWARD: MOST OUTSTANDING MUSIC STUDENT
Mr. Ronnie W. is native from Dallas, Texas. Mr. W attended Dallas Lincoln Humanities / Communications Magnet High School. As a student of music growing up he was taught how to play the saxophone during his 7th grade year. Mr. W. started to flourish on the instrument and was quickly moved from Beginning Band to Advanced Band. Mr. W. continued to play Saxophone all through High School. As a Senior in High School he was honored with several different scholarship opportunities to attend the college of his choice. Mr. W. chose Grambling State University where he participated in several different bands and organizations. In 2004 I created a group in honor of Grover Washington, Jr., which is named after his Grammy Award winning album "Winelight Jazz". Throughout his career Mr. W. has been instrumental in helping students to make it to the State Music Festivals.
MY TEACHING EXPERIENCE DATES BACK TO THE YEAR OF 1991. I STARTED WORKING WITH STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL, TEACHING THEM HOW TO BECOME A BETTER STUDENT OF MUSIC. IN THE LAST 22 YEARS I HAVE HAD STUDENTS TO MAKE ALL-AREA BANDS AND ORCHESTRAS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. IN THE PRESENT TIME I ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PRACTICE 15 MINUTES A DAY INSTEAD OF THE LONG-GATED 1 HOUR PRACTICE. ALSO I ENCOURAGE THE STUDENT TO BE CONSISTENT AND 15 MINUTES AUTOMATICALLY TURNS INTO 30 MINUTES. IF A STUDENT IS NOT HAVING FUN I'M NOT DOING MY JOB. I LOVE TO TEACH ALL AGES AND BRING ON NEW STUDENTS.
FOR BEGINNING BAND STUDENTS I START OFF USING EITHER ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OR STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE. WITH STRING STUDENTS I USE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR STRINGS.FOR JAZZ STUDENTS I USE THE JAMEY ABERSOLD JAZZ METHODS AND ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR JAZZ COMBO. WHEN IT COMES TO JAZZ THESE ARE THE BEST METHOD BOOKS FOR SOMEONE THAT WANT'S TO LEAR HOW TO PLAY JAZZ/BLUES. MY PHILOSOPHY OF LEARNING MUSIC IS THAT ALL STUDENTS CAN LEARN HOW TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT IF THEY APPLY THEMSELVES TO THE METHOD THAT IS BEING TAUGHT. ONCE THIS HAPPENS THEY WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IN ALL CATEGORIES. ALSO I
I HAVE A SOME BUT AGGRESSIVE TEACHING STYLE BECAUSE I WANT STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CAN RESPOND UNDER PRESSURE WHEN PERFORMING. I ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO SET GOALS AND MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE ACCOMPLISHING EVERYTHING THAT THEY WANT TO ACCOMPLISH. I ALWAYS START OFF AND TAYLOR THE STUDENTS DESIRE OF LEARNING SO THAT THEY ARE EAGER TO LEARN AND HAVE FUN WHEN THEY PRACTICE OR PERFORM. I ALWAYS TRY TO KEEP THE PACE MOVING SO THAT THEY WILL NOT LOSE FOCUS AND STAY ON PACE FOR SUCCESS. THERE IS NOTHING MORE REWARDING TO SEE ONE OF MY STUDENTS ON THE BIG STAGE RECEIVING FIRST DIVISION RATINGS, GRAMMY'S AND THE SATISFACTION THAT THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL AT LEARNING A NEW INSTRUMENT, OR HAS IMPROVED ON THE INSTRUMENT THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE FUN LEARNING AT A EARLIER STAGE IN THIER LIFE.
I first started learning how to play te instrument. I hated it at first, but when Mr. W started working with me he showed me a different concept on the instrument. I can't wait to come to my lessons. I thank God for him because he motivated me to be the best.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
