I have 31 years of experience both performing and teaching music professionally. I began playing and teaching while still in college and Never stopped. When I lived in NYC I taught at the Third Street Music Settlement, as well as privately, while also maintaining a steady performing career. I began teaching trombone and improvisation when I was a junior in High School. Currently I am adept in Singing, Music Theory, Trombone, Bass (-classical) and Electronic Music, but I also practice Flute, Piano, Guitar,Percussion (congas) and Tap Dancing. During your first lesson, we will work on learning chords, and how to read tablature. For younger students, we may start with abbreviated versions of chords in order to start playing popular songs and make the learning process easier. Also, I'll introduce 5-line staff paper sometime during the first few lessons, and we may start work on a simple tune/melody. Having studied guitar formally for 4 years at Berklee, I pull from materials that I found most helpful to me during my own education. These include scales, chords, modes, picking patterns and even solos. Aside from fundamentals and exercises, my favorite method of teaching is asking a student what they want to learn, a song they enjoy for example, and doing my best to teach the student how to play it and why it works from a harmonic perspective.
