For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. If I could describe my style as a mix combination of classical, rock, and songwriting. For technique, I utilize traditional classical techniques since, in my opinion, I believe that they are the most effective in establishing a strong foundation. For creativity, I usually give each the student the chance to play a duo with me playing anything that they want.
