I love setting lofty, reasonably challenging goals for my students and giving them music they think is too hard to play, and then watching their faces light up when they hit all the right notes they didn't know were possible to hit. Depending upon the students goals I like to take the approach of introducing harmony at a point in which that student is proficient on the open chords of the guitar and scales in the first position. If the student chooses to learn classical guitar I would begin with basic exercises in reading and playing from Frederick M Noad's Solo Guitar Paying.
