I like to get an idea from the student and the parent what their expectations are for music lessons. From there, the student and I come up with musical goals to accomplish for that year. We create a practice schedule based on the student's school and extracurricular activities and try to follow that schedule as much as possible. I also like to incorporate other styles of music such as popular Broadway pieces and Contemporary pieces into the student's repertoire so that they can have greater diversity in their piano playing or singing. I have been instructing students in voice for a year now. I have worked with kids as young as 6 years old to high school level. I encourage consistent and regular practice, but also breaks and time to ask questions if one is stuck and not sure what to do. I mainly use classical style techniques and songs to build strong vocal instruments, but I also reference and use genres that individual students prefer to sing to keep their interest and build their love for singing.
