I started teaching over ten years ago. I have taught several amazing violin and piano students ages 4-16 over the years. In my experience, I've found that the Suzuki Violin method books work very well for private lessons but can teach other methods. I have a degree in violin performance and play the piano as well. I love teaching piano and violin lessons to students of all ages from beginner to upper intermediate levels. I studied piano performance with Robert Smith and violin performance with Percy Kalt at BYU; I have also studied with Jeffrey Shumway, former Head of Keyboard Studies, BYU and Carroll Meyer, Boise State University. I use the Suzuki Method throughout my teaching process. I think it is a great bases for teaching the techniques necessary to master the violin/viola. I also use various scale books (according to level) to teach note reading, sight reading, and basic music theory. Each student in my studio is required to work on a technique (scales, etc.) and one to two solo pieces. Along with this, majority of my students perform with orchestras in schools or the community. I've had no official teaching positions yet, but I have had the opportunity to teach music in more casual contexts. Being the principal violist of the Lyceum Philharmonic for a year, I was tasked to conduct sectionals, and help the viola section become more solid. Also, I sometimes will help my younger brother with his piano practice, helping him solve musical problems, and enjoy playing more. Some of my earliest memories are from learning how to read music. I've been involved in piano and violin for most of my life, beginning both early in elementary school. I studied privately for roughly ten years under various instructors while in school. My instruction consisted mostly of solo performance pieces, but I was fortunate to be able to enjoy many years in the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony as well as experience the Idaho All-State Orchestra and the Teton Chamber Orchestra.
