I approach piano and violin instruction from a foundational, constructive perspective, combined with building rapport and reciprocal clarifying communications. Essentially this means that the student and I interact to build understanding by using the familiar to grasp the unfamiliar. An example is: When teaching hand position, I use the natural position the student already has when the hand is relaxed to build the hand playing position. The student is encouraged to ask questions, to feel free to make mistakes in order to take the risks necessary for true understanding and growth, and to engage in productive discussion leading to personal clarity with regard to their playing. I've had no official teaching positions yet, but I have had the opportunity to teach music in more casual contexts. Being the principal violist of the Lyceum Philharmonic for a year, I was tasked to conduct sectionals, and help the viola section become more solid. Also, I sometimes will help my younger brother with his piano practice, helping him solve musical problems, and enjoy playing more. I enjoy teaching because I have a love for music. It's my hope that this love and motivation to play well will be passed on to my students. It's so rewarding to me to see my students learning and growing in their musical abilities. I offer plenty of praise and encouragement. Some of my earliest memories are from learning how to read music. I've been involved in piano and violin for most of my life, beginning both early in elementary school. I studied privately for roughly ten years under various instructors while in school. My instruction consisted mostly of solo performance pieces, but I was fortunate to be able to enjoy many years in the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony as well as experience the Idaho All-State Orchestra and the Teton Chamber Orchestra. As a section leader and concert mistress in my high school's orchestra, I was responsible in helping my teammates learn the music and practice for performances. Developing proper techniques, rhythm, and focusing on problem areas in regular practice sessions are important points I help students work through. Whether it be private lessons for individual improvement and solo pieces or multiple people in an ensemble, the basic skills are important in conveying the meaning and emotions of a piece of music.
