I believe the most important goal in learning to sing is to use a healthy tone production free of tension. This is true no matter what style of music the student wants to learn. I use my own exercises, written on manuscript paper that is tailored to the students needs, but always includes exercises for breathe control, relaxation and proper resonance. My favorite quote is: "All students have gifts, they just open their presents have different times."  I work with students where they are and at their pace.  I start beginners with Essential Elements 2000 for Strings.  As students progress I use Samuel Applebaum method books, traditional etudes like Wolfhardt and Sevick, Suzuki books and solo pieces as appropriate.  I teach Traditional Classical string instruction.  I will work to find pieces that students find interesting and keep my instruction engaging and fun for all of my students of all ages. I treat adult beginners much the same I would treat an older child beginner, with a simple book that won't overwhelm them with too much information. If an adult student has some experience, I also do the same evaluation and tailoring approach as I would with a younger intermediate student. For young children, I usually choose teaching books that are more fun and give them a basic start with understanding musical symbols by performing tasks in their books. Once students begin to understand how to read and play, I start to introduce the next level of material for them. For adults, I focus on what they are interested in and give more in-depth theory or compositional discussions if they wish or guide them towards playing pieces they always wanted to learn. Read More
