I think learning by ear at first can be really helpful so I would teach the student to hear and identify pitches and play songs by ear. The importance of how the teacher transfers their method is dire in helping students develop and grow. Learning that each student has their own pace at learning an instrument is also very important on both sides tof the teacher and student, so using whatever to help a student grasp how to play is key.
