I accomplish this by incorporating the interests of each student and including time in each lesson to improvise, create, or learn music they are interested in.   In teaching voice, I am sensitive to the delicate nature of young voices and teach total musicianship, including tonal memory, scales, sight-reading, and repertoire. I highly encourage students to sing music they love and feel a real connection to; any style or genre is fair game! I like to be very organized, with a clear, step by step process for each concept the student is learning. I often use visual imagery and I demonstrate each concept before asking the student to try it. I try to put myself in their place when they are frustrated and break down each idea into small pieces.
