I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for most of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. In voice, I let my students' goals guide their lessons. Whether it be stage performance, studio recording or personal satisfaction, I will use a variety of techniques to help them reach their individual goals. In violin and viola, I teach the Suzuki method combined with some contemporary and fun improvisation. I teach theory, but also how to communicate with musicians in general. I also make it a goal for the student to learn one major classical piece throughout the course of instruction: "Fur Elise" by Beethoven, or "Moonlight Sonata: 1st Movement" by Beethoven. For me, the best part of teaching is helping students grow, and helping them realize their musical abilities and self-reliance. I feel that my role as a teacher is to present new information or challenges, and aid the student in learning how to address those challenges on their own. I find that this encourages the students to want to learn more and more to expand their own musical and technical literacy, and it makes them much more prepared for individual practice, ensemble playing, and future challenges where they have to rely on themselves.
