I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. With beginner students, regardless of age, I start with the Suzuki pre-twinkle exercises to build a solid foundation of technique, as well as starting ear training exercises and note reading practice. Once a student has mastered the pre-twinkle fundamentals, I move to the first two Suzuki books, and supplement with etudes tailored to the student's level and musical interests. My philosophy is that learning should be organic and enjoyable, so I do my best to introduce repetitive and uninteresting exercises only when necessary, and to make them as entertaining as possible when I do so. As I said above, I have been teaching since I was in high school and began studying the Suzuki Method at the age of four. I believe that anyone is able to learn an instrument no matter their age, as long as they stick to a regular practice schedule, have patience, are passionate, and have goals in mind at all times. I began studying viola when I was 7 and learned through the Suzuki Method.  By the time I was in high school I was a teacher assistant at the Farmington Summer Suzuki String Academy where I taught private and group lessons for young students.  During that time I also was learning guitar and giving lessons to children in my neighborhood. While I was at the University of Connecticut working on my Bachelor of Arts in Music and studying viola, I taught at the UConn Community School of the Arts. Read More
