I generally use a method book for teaching band or orchestral private students. I also use other resources depending on the needs of the student. I always ask my students what they want to achieve and base my teaching on those goals. ( Of course, I provide guidance in making some of those goals!) For beginning students I generally use the Suzuki books and have had some training in the method. I don't use a strict Suzuki method but combine it with a more traditional approach by including note reading, scales, etc. I also use the Faber books in conjunction with the Suzuki for piano. For adults I generally give them the option of choosing the music they would like to learn and then try to incorporate some of the technical elements by using scales and Hanon exercises. Read More

As rudimentary as it sounds scales and arpeggios make up a lot of the initial lessons as these form the proficiency and styling of any performance. It is from scales and arpeggios that you learn classical to jazz to pop. I currently teach music at a private Academy in Nashville during the morning and love working with the students to develope their technical as well as musical abilities.
