My method of teaching is to start students with a strong foundation of buzzing and making characteristic sounds on the horn. This includes buzzing with and without the mouthpiece. Also, my students must be able to read music. Reading music is very important to me, having the students be musically literate with a decent tone will take a student far in their musical career. I played bass guitar in high school and university jazz bands, the latter of which performed very well at the UNC Greeley Jazz Festivals in the early 2000s. I was required to learn to play and teach brass instruments, and am proficient at those, as well. I have been very fortunate to also have been around a lot of world class teaching after becoming a teacher, myself; much of that is courtesy of the Texas Music Educators Association and the wonderful teachers I have encountered in my career. I create my own custom lesson plans upon each students needs/wants. After an assessment of skills I create a plan to help the student harness in on the things that need work and polish the skill sets that are already there. Usually, I pick a good series of lesson books that we will work through together. If it is an entirely new student I work at things one at a time to make sure we're getting in all the basics and fundamentals needed for the more advanced skills. Read More
