I always start with getting to know the student and identifying his or her goals. What is the objective? From there, we will map out how we are going to get to that point. Most students' goal is to learn songs, so we will begin by identifying what those songs are. I will then figure out what skills are needed to play those songs, and we will start learning those skills at the most basic level possible, gradually increasing complexity until you have the ability to put those skills together and start rocking out! I'm a professional trumpet player who enjoys working with students of all experience levels and interests. I recently graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet degree from the University of Michigan, where I was the Graduate Student Instructor in trumpet and Instructor of Trumpet. I'm fortunate to have performed with ensembles of a wide range of genres, including serving as Acting Principal Trumpet of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, second trumpet with the University of Michigan Brass Quintet, improviser with the International Contemporary Ensemble, among many others. For children, my foundational methods include Leonard, Krueger, Clarke, Arban, Reinhardt, Rizzetto, Pearson, and Rubank. Solo and ensemble repertoire is introduced at the appropriate time. Time is also spent on improvisation, writing original compositions, and learning music that the students have brought to the lesson. For adults, we focus on what students are interested in working on, regardless of their ability level.
