Overview:

I'm a passionate educator and musician who enjoys sharing my love for music with students. I have experience with Trumpet performance in a wide range of settings from Orchestral brass sections to Jazz combos. My graduate studies were completed in New York at SUNY Purchase under the tutelage of Jon Faddis. I have been fortunate to have many amazing performance opportunities, including: Tour of England and Wales, Tour of Austria and Germany, 5 National Brass Band Competitions, performances at Dizzy's Coca Cola Club and The Bluenote. Through these experiences I have been able to determine what is required for professional level performance and I try to bring these lessons to all of my students. I am always willing to work with my students on any music that interests them and use that music as a vehicle to gain technique and competency in as wide a scope as possible.

EXPERIENCE

I began teaching trumpet lessons during my undergraduate studies almost 10 years ago. At first my students were mostly peers who were trying to learn trumpet for various music education classes. Since then I have taught students from elementary to adult. I have been very fortunate to study with knowledgable and kind teachers who have shaped my views on education. I try to approach every student as a friend and peer by sharing my experiences and personal journey with the trumpet. By allowing my students to work on the music that they most identify with and sharing my personal experiences in a myriad of genres, I hope to broaden every student's knowledge and tastes in an effort to produce well rounded musicians.

METHODS USED

When dealing with the trumpet, no matter the students age or experience, I always prioritize relaxation and efficiency. The trumpet can be a physically demanding instrument and it is important to practice and perform in a way that will allow the student to achieve the maximum gains with every lesson, while also minimizing any risk of strain or overexertion. For beginning students I like to start with tone production and flexibility in order to establish a firm understanding of the rudimentary function of the trumpet and brass embouchure. Once we have established an understanding of the fundamentals of sound we move onto technique, which we build through scale and melody exercises (some of which I will write). For experienced students I like to work mainly on repertoire and style; this study can be as focused or broad as the student would like. However; no matter the student's ability level I emphasize the importance of fundamentals.

LESSON STYLE

I have been fortunate to study with very great teachers who were excited to share their passion for music with me. Through these experiences I have learned that a passionate and committed student will be more willing and able to devote time and effort to practicing in a correct and meaningful way. In my teaching I seek to identify and broaden a student's existing musical interests in an attempt to deepen their fundamental understanding of music. I will gladly work with any student on music of their choosing, but am intent on exposing them to as wide a range of styles, genres, etc. as possible. I love music and my ultimate goal with every student is to assist them in reaching their musical goals.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
