For beginning students, I focus on the fundamentals of music as such as note values, note reading, dynamic marking, and tempo. It is important that students have a foundation and in understanding how to read music. I will begin with a warm ups to develop ear training and pitch. I am more relaxed and fun-loving, but I encourage quality musicianship. You enjoy something more when you have put in more work. More effort = more reward. Music really gives opportunities for each step of success to be met with ways to enjoy that conquered step, also. It's not so arduous as becoming an astronaut, etc., where you may have 10 or twenty steps in between enjoying their success. I began teaching lessons in college, and have enjoyed it from the very first day. I try to evaluate each student spefifically and see what they need to improve in the most efficient manner possible. Exercises and drills are present in my lessons, but I alwaystry to teach the bulk of trumpet fundamentals through actual music such as etudes, solos, band music, duets,etc. In this style of teaching, the students can pick what they want to play (after I give them a few guidelines), and we can still target the areas of playing that need work.
