Instruments:

I am an enthusiatic and personable teacher with experience spanning 3 decades and 2 continents.   I graduated from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where I was a student of Anthony Marchione (former Principal Trumpet with the Columbia Symphony, and teacher of Randy Brecker and Lee Morgan).  In the classical field, I have worked directly with Leonard Bernstein on the Broadway show "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" and have served as Principal Trumpet with the Colorado Philharmonic, the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Orchestra Brass Quintet. In the commercial field, I have played trumpet for entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Steve Lawrence & Edi Gorme,Michel Legrand, Nancy Wilson, Lena Horne, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr, Diana Ross, The Spinners, The Temptations, and others.  My passion and practical experience in the music field make me well suited to guide students of all ages and help them to enjoy learning music at all levels and styles. My teaching studio is a large, open and finished space -  well suited accoustically to hearing ones true sound (important for development) and is complete with audio and video systems to aid in teaching through illustration as needed.  The student  will feel relaxed, focused and "at home" in this space.

While in Louisville, Mr. Curtin enjoyed an active freelance teaching and performing career, serving as a teaching artist in many public and private schools.   A world traveler, Mr. Curtin has performed in over a dozen countries as a leader with the Long Island Youth Orchestra and loves exploring the music of world cultures. Additionally, Mr. Curtin has enjoyed several performances at Carnegie Hall, most recently as Assistant Principal Trumpet of the National Collegiate Wind Ensemble in 2009, under the baton of H. Robert Reynolds.   Since returning to New York in early 2013, Mr. Curtin has enjoyed performing and teaching in the Greater New York City Area and looks forward to working with and helping students reach their musical goals.

I gratuated from an urban school in Orange, NJ and was given the opportunity to attend Seton Hall University and graduate with a degree in Music Education on schloarships alone. Because of this, I understand what hard work means. You will find me to be an easy-going person, and one that possesses a love of music and an enjoyment of working with people. I believe I could help students develop their talents while fostering their passion for music.

More Information About Trumpet Lessons

A standard trumpet includes many pieces: the rim, the cup, the mouthpiece, the shank, the leadpipe, the valve pistons, and the valve casings. We recommend that when you are purchasing your first trumpet that you visit a music store and speak with a trumpet expert. Prices for trumpets can vary widely, so it is best to have a budget in mind. The majority of students choose to rent a trumpet before purchasing. As the mouthpiece of the trumpet is a very personal part of the instrument, if you are renting, you will need to invest in the mouthpiece portion.
In home trumpet lessons are extremely convenient for parents and students alike. Studying in home is no different than studying in a studio. Lessons are generally once a week.
Taking trumpet lessons is a great way for a child to get started learning music. The trumpet is very portable, so as long as you have a nice sturdy case, it can be transported to and from school and rehearsals with ease. Many students who are studying in a band ensemble in their school program, will also wish to take private lessons to enhance their playing. In lessons students will learn how to read music, rhythms, and the technique of playing trumpet.
We love adult students! We have adults who begin trumpet lessons as complete beginners, some who haven't played their trumpet in over 10 years, and some who are more advanced students looking to take their skills to the next level. Our teachers have proven methods to get you the results you desire.
We suggest starting trumpet lessons at age 7 or 8. A student should be able to hold the instrument correctly, so their fingers must be large enough to do this. Playing trumpet also requires significant lung capacity, which can be difficult for a younger child.
