I always start by meeting the students where they are. There are a few lessons that are somewhat evaluatory for me to understand their capabilities, their goals and their learning styles. For beginners of all ages, I typically use the Faber Piano Series. These method books conveniently come with versions for both adults and children. What I have found is that students are more inclined to get over the Beginner's Hump-- that frustrating first month or two where we have to train our fingers to move independently of each other-- when they are playing songs that they recognize. Faber does a great job of arranging commonly known pieces for beginners with fun duets for student and teacher so we can play together. Read More

My teaching experience back in the day was when I started working as a music teaching assistant more than 20 years ago. I will pay attention to the kids who were not be in learning music. That's what I thought, and I know I'll have to slow down and find the way that influencing their study or if they just want to be more active instead of sitting around.
