I ask all my students if they want to be a technician, an artist, or both. A technician is someone who is technically proficient on their instrument and works towards executing difficult techniques and passages. An artist is someone who makes creative choices via their instrument. There is room for both in all genres, and while learning to read music is incredibly important, I am very against the monkey-see-monkey-do approach of just reading sheet music and nothing else. I think relationships is what drives everything. If you don't build a trustworthy relationship with your student and learn about who they are and what they like then, you will not have a successful turn out. I believe in only sticking with what the student is comfortable with learning. I will push and stretch them when it is needed, but I like to start by asking "what do you want to learn?"
