For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. I worked with young and old, from ages 6 till 90, and each lesson is tailored to the student's age and ability. After first lesson I can see what method I can use for that student.
