I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Music Degree, piano emphasis, and a Master of Education Degree in Elementary Education. My goal in teaching is to empower, inspire, and motivate every student to obtain their personal best, and to develop a life-long love of music. I have a varied background in music, and am comfortable teaching all styles of music. I also teach chords, theory, and improvisation and incorporate it into the lesson in a practical way. Many former students are professional musicians and singers. I am currently employed as an elementary music teacher in the public school system.
I began teaching piano at age sixteen at a music studio, referred to the owner by my own piano teacher. I have successfully taught piano and voice many years and feel that students should learn in a way that is motivating and rewarding. I have extensive experience working with young voices as well as adults, and am pleased to offer vocal coaching as needed to performing students.
I prefer the Bastien Piano method for piano instruction when teaching children. I feel it offers a great foundational approach, well rounded, sequential, and motivating for students. When teaching beginning adults, I teach the basics, always keeping their goal and interests in mind. I also have much experience teaching/coaching Worship Leaders who need to play keys and sing, and have many years experience in this role myself. I have conducted numerous children's choirs, and adult choirs as well.
I believe that anyone can achieve success when pursuing the study of music! It is the teacher's role to discover strengths and interests and to guide the student in developing their fullest musical potential. As an educator, I understand that students need assignments that are at their independent level of study, and base the lesson experience on that knowledge. I love seeing the joy and confidence that emerges as students progress toward their goal of playing and singing well!
