My favorite part about teaching is watching my students progress. Nothing is better than seeing the progress one makes after a given time. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace. Setting goals for themselves can work well but there is no need to rush anything. Learning takes time and especially learning an instrument. Words of affirmation when acknowledging a students accomplishment(s) helps students desire to continue to progress and make them eager to keep on learning. Read More

Teaching is a step by step process and it takes time, effort and patience. I like to break things down into easily attainable steps and then build from there. Instruments: Piano, Voice, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, French Horn, Tuba
For my advanced students (18+), depending on how advanced they are, I start them in the "First Book of _______ Solos" series. For younger brass students (10-14) I would teach out of the Standard of Excellence Books unless they are more advanced where I would start them in the Arbans Book, Robert Getchell Book, and/or Schlossberg Book. My main method is to be in the middle between having a discipline, encouraging to practice regularly, stay focused but at the same time to remain curious about the process and not let the students develop the habit where they need to practice because they need to. With some older students I try to be somewhat specific and explain what are the things we are working on, why we are working on this, and how to archive it. Read More
Instruments: Piano, Drums, Mallet Percussion, Orchestral Percussion, Music, Keyboard
I like to get students playing actual music as soon as possible. Many students start taking lessons and are discouraged by the cut-throat nature of focusing on technique for so long. Students should be playing actual music, not just exercises and drills, pretty early on! For percussionists and drummers who only have a practice pad, this seems pretty impossible, but getting a student jamming along with their favorite song for the first time is always an incredible thing to watch.
