I use the Suzuki method for all starters, however, the repertoire is not only Suzuki. As indicated reading method, the more used is the I Can Read Music and the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. My students' repertoire is very significant in the process to be played and arranged for an ensemble as well. I understand that each student has a specific kind of motivation to play a musical instrument and usually, the student finds a new way when he/she start playing in a group (in his church, school etc). As with all students, I like tooassess the level of experience before setting a particular method. Once I teach proper warm up habits, I start by working on scales and range development. Once a basic knowledge of scales and warm up habits are established, I search the student to see what her/his interests are in music styles. Once that is accomplished...we can move on the bigger and better things. Read More

Practice makes perfect. I believe the basics are the most important part to any education including a musical one. Just as a building requires a solid foundation before it can rise to the sky so too do students need to master fundamentals before moving on to the more challenging aspects of their instruments. I mastering the saxophone I would focus on basics such as fingering, scales, posture, breathing technique, rhythm and embouchure. Read More

For Band students I normally use the method used in class or I will use the Ed Suede Band method. I like this method because it starts out very basically and simply and gradually increases in difficulty. Voice students must first pass an Audiation test which is essentially a test of their sense of pitch. From there I begin with vocalizations followed by singing materials. I have composed my own First Studies for Guitar. Read More

I create my own custom lesson plans upon each students needs/wants. After an assessment of skills I create a plan to help the student harness in on the things that need work and polish the skill sets that are already there. Usually, I pick a good series of lesson books that we will work through together. If it is an entirely new student I work at things one at a time to make sure we're getting in all the basics and fundamentals needed for the more advanced skills. Read More

Every student is different, so my teaching approach is rarely identical from student to student. Technical training progresses as a student develops motivation through his or her practice habits. I try to encourage practice through journal entry and self-accountability. I also try to make a student's home practice a little more exciting by setting goals and explaining what will be accomplished through achieving these short-term goals. Introducing new concepts while perfecting basic technique is how I try to captivate a student's attention and excitement for music. Read More
