I have been teaching in the NOVA area for a little over three years now. I started when I returned from out of state and have not looked back since. I have maintained a studio of about 10-15 students almost consistently after about a year of starting. My students have ranged widely in age, from elementary students to retired adults who have have wanted to learn an instrument. I always start with getting to know the student and identifying his or her goals. What is the objective? From there, we will map out how we are going to get to that point. Most students' goal is to learn songs, so we will begin by identifying what those songs are. I will then figure out what skills are needed to play those songs, and we will start learning those skills at the most basic level possible, gradually increasing complexity until you have the ability to put those skills together and start rocking out! For beginner students, I work through Hal Leonard's Guitar Method books 1-3. I then supplement with William Leavitt's A modern Method for Guitar Volume 1. I incorporate the student's musical interests throughout this by asking them for a list of their favorite songs that I then teach them the chords for. This keeps them interest in sticking to the guitar lessons while also sneaking basic music theory into the lessons.
