ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

B.A. University of Mary Washington, Music

Overview:

I am a passionate instructor who offers lessons which are both informative and fun. In 2013 I graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in music and a focus in guitar. While in school I developed a love of teaching, as I taught a few of my peers. I also performed in my university's guitar ensemble where I learned to play in a group format. Upon graduating, I took on students independently where I taught students from ages 5 to adult. I currently teach a group of students at Pine Camp Community Center. I am looking forward to meeting you and setting up a lesson!

EXPERIENCE

My love of teaching dates back to my freshman year of college when I began teaching a few friends acoustic guitar. Since then, I have had consistent students ever since. For my senior thesis, I wrote on the therapeutic qualities of music lessons on kids with autism. For my project, I gave ukulele lessons to a student with autism and recorded the positive affects the lessons had on his mood. The results were amazing! I have had many students since then, some of which went on to join bands. I am always looking to add additional students of all ages!

METHODS USED

For beginner students, I work through Hal Leonard's Guitar Method books 1-3. I then supplement with William Leavitt's A modern Method for Guitar Volume 1. I incorporate the student's musical interests throughout this by asking them for a list of their favorite songs that I then teach them the chords for. This keeps them interest in sticking to the guitar lessons while also sneaking basic music theory into the lessons. The students will then be well rounded in both theory and technique while still keeping lessons fun and engaging.

LESSON STYLE

I teach in order to see students become passionate about music! I allow room for students to advance at their own pace while also encouraging them to have healthy practice habits so they grow as musicians. Every student is different, with different interests and that is why I allow room for my students to learn the things that captivate their attention. I want my students to look forward to their lessons each week and that is why I tailor them to fit each student's specific needs. I also keep my lessons positive so that my students appreciate their accomplishments.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
