I have been teaching lessons for 5 years now and got started teaching while studying at Berklee, since then I have grown a lot as a teacher. I have taught guitar and music production at Needham Public High School, where I taught students of all skill levels in classroom settings. I also currently teach at School of Rock Watertown where I teach private lessons as well as ensembles. Melody (lead) playing is not essential, but encouraged, as I believe it is a viable and gratifying skill. Supplemental books are helpful and encouraged, but not required, as is music theory and sight reading (standard notation). Many books will include technical studies such as theory, which can certainly be helpful. Playing by ear is very helpful and useful, and I do utilize that. I have performed in jazz combos, rock bands, acoustic folk groups, and free improvisation ensembles; my teachers and mentors have included guitarists Joe Morris, Julian Lage, Paul Bollenback, Bob Ferrazza, and Lenny Breau student/fretboard harmony guru Bob Thompson; improvisors Carla Kihlstedt, Eden MacAdam-Somer, and Hankus Netsky; and composers Anthony Coleman and Stratis Minakakis. As I picked up students through word-of-mouth referrals, friends, and fellow church members, I was able to take students through the rudiments of guitar, and in some cases produced some very advanced players. My teaching experience in Chelsea High School enabled me to take roughly 1800 students through basic guitar; again, some of these really caught fire and are pursuing guitar passionately through their bands. I graduated with a BA in Music with Initial State Teacher Licensure, and worked with a Boston-area Summer High School Band Program sponsored by Boston Latin School at Symphony Hall, working with the woodwind and percussion sections on sight-reading and part-preparation for their summer concert. I've taught guitar and piano part-time for over 12 years.
