I want to prioritize their own independence within these lessons in regards to choosing their own repertoire or experimenting with their own compositional style so that they can embrace how liberating and fun learning about music and being creative can be, rather than seeing it as a chore! I also want to make sure that their musical journey is built with the right mindset - a lot of the time there is unnecessary toxic, competitive energy within other musicians which defeats the whole purpose of inspirational collaboration that can come from playing music with others. I like to tailor each lesson to a student's personal goals and skill level. If the student is a beginner, I typically begin with the method book Flute 101 to learn the appropriate fingerings, sound production, posture, etc. If the student does not have a prior musical background, we will also discuss note reading, ear training, and other aspects of musical education. If the student already knows the basic fundamentals of the instrument, I like to have a discussion about what the student is looking to achieve from their lessons. Read More

I like my students to bring a small notebook, so that they may write their homework down, and any practice assignments.  I expect my students to keep a practice log of how much time they practice per week, in between lessons.  I always insist that setting goals and expectations for them, is very important, as well as keeping track of whether they themselves are staying on task.  I try and incorporate different ways of practicing or playing music, so that even practicing turns into being fun and exciting and doesn't feel like a chore.  Read More
