In my 30 years of teaching experience, and being exposed to many methods, I chose to mix and match them to each student's ability and disposition. Each student is different with variety of expectations, abilities and interests, so as I get to know them, I try to best cater to their needs and find ways for them to learn while growing and improving on every level, not just musically. Engaging students in variety of ways of learning (visual, auditory, etc), I also care of their personal stories, which I find brings great connection and makes learning much more fun for my students as they feel heard. I find that when teaching just reading a book and rote playing isn't enough. I like to use scales, singing, and creative composition to get my students to think outside of the box and learn to independently create music while learning theory basics. I like to help my students be one of a kind and be in love with the music that they are creating...if they don't look forward to coming to class again, then I know I haven't done my job fully.
