As a teacher, I have learned the last 4 years that you can't expect a student to just know something right away. It takes time, and students have to take it at their own pace. Sometimes, you have to differentiate instruction often, until the student starts to understand something. So, I find it is important to be student-centered and focus on the goals they can achieve, little at a time. A few years later, I took up flute and violin and joined local ensembles. I have traveled around the west coast performing classical, jazz, pop, and folk music. My methods vary on the student and subject. Beginning students will typically focus more on technical pieces of music to improve on certain aspects of a few pieces to perform. More advanced students will still practice technical parts of their music, but less time will be spent on it during a lesson. Advanced level students will spend more time on repertoire and performance.
