As a teacher, I have learned the last 4 years that you can't expect a student to just know something right away. It takes time, and students have to take it at their own pace. Sometimes, you have to differentiate instruction often, until the student starts to understand something. So, I find it is important to be student-centered and focus on the goals they can achieve, little at a time. I am an active musician based in the Portland metropolitan area who is hired regularly to perform for: jazz and cover bands, weddings, corporate events, musicals, and studio sessions. I also lead and write music for my own band. I attended Mount Hood Community College and Portland State University where I graduated with a B.S. in biology and in jazz studies. I adapt the lesson to the student to find how they will learn best. I encourage creativity and challenge students to try composing their own music.
