I like to see what the student is currently working on, interested in, or what the school district encourages.   I am open to student / parent wishes; I understand that while some student goals are to find a career with music, there are many who are looking to grow within a hobby! I typically start piano lessons with the Bastien Method books, but I have started using Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber, as well as Alfred's Adult Course and Hal Leonard for my adult piano students. I also use Piano Pronto. For flute and guitar, I start with Hal Leonard's books to help get them started. Each student is unique in their own way, from how they learn to how they produce an end product. But one thing I stress in my teaching with all students is demonstration, imitation and repetition. The old adage that says, "practice makes perfect", is not always right. If the student is practice wrong, they will perform it wrong. I believe that every students learns at their own pace and in their own way. Because of this, my teaching style will vary slightly for each students. I always find ways to motivate my students to practice on their own. I do this by trying to find music that fits their interests, helping them set long-term and short-term goals, and giving students etudes, repertoire, and practice techniques that are challenging, yet not overwhelming.
