Hello! I am a flutist and piccoloist who is passionate about teaching others. I am currently working towards a Masters in Flute Performance at Colorado State University. I just recently graduated from Florida State University this December with a Bachelors in Instrumental Music Education, a Bachelors in Music Theory, and a Specialized Study in Flute Performance. During my time at FSU, I worked with students in a variety of settings including a semester long student teaching internship with the Vero Beach High School band program. Read More

For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson. Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire. Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority. I believe the connection between the mind and body is very important, and you will find me often asking questions to engage the students in being aware of what they are doing as they are playing. When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More

My approach to teaching is very interactive. I seek to provide my students with many different was to experience music including singing, playing, listening and analyzing. In this way, my students may make lasting connections with music and find success in many different areas of study. I, as well, strive to be the best example I can be for my students so that they may see musical possibilities which may not be presented to them otherwise. Read More

For students beginning in an elementary band program, I like to use the same book (such as Essential Elements) that they are using in school. With students learning outside of a band class, or if it won't interfere with what they've already learned, I start with just the headjoint of the flute, making sure the student is comfortable producing clear sound before adding the body of the flute. Because the flute is not like the other woodwind instruments in that you do not blow directly into it, it can be challenging for students to learn how to form an embouchure. Read More

I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music; a student who practices and looks forward to coming to music lessons is a joy to teach. Each student must progress at his or her own pace; therefore realistic goals must be set at each lesson. Rewarding students for reaching practice goals makes students eager to learn more, and seeing how far they have progressed makes student's proud of their accomplishments. Read More
