There are two basic method books for beginners, and comprehensive, themed books for advanced players that focus on Tone, Technique, Articulation, Intonation, Vibrato, Breathing, and Scales. I use a big diversity of books and methods for my flute classes, that I pick trying to adapt to my students' age and interests. With little children I use many short and simple songs, that get more and more complex while the students are progressing. I like to introduce solo repertoire as soon as possible, to start developing the students' personal taste for music. I also encourage them to bring their own suggestions about the pieces or songs they want to play, and I create personalized technique exercises to improve the specific difficulties that they find along their practice. My teaching style is a mixture of a relaxed, conversational feel combined with strong focus. I will constantly insist on stern focus on the material being played- offering big picture ideas as to why a piece is being practiced in a certain way, while asking the student to tell me why such and such a method makes sense. For small children, I used kid-friendly method books provided by the music school I was working with at the time to keep them engaged and entertained. For older children and adults, I simply ask about their prior musical knowledge and the music that they enjoy so we could use that as inspiration. For beginning students, I recommend the Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements which are both great options for the basics of their instruments and both include fingering charts and fingerings for each new note they learn.
