I focus on the student's preferred genre and songs, and I make theory work for those particular songs; i.e. I find common chord progressions, their related scales, and have students improvise using those scales [though I emphasize chord tones, syncopation and more ... equally, not just scales]). I am the epitome of patience, and I always seek to reassess a student's goals so as to hit the target as ideally on as possible (no sense in learning the complexity of jazz when punk rock is your only love!). My teaching experience dates back to my freshman year of college in 2013. I began teaching snare drum and drum set to one private student. As time went on through my undergraduate studies, I had a studio of twenty lessons students. Coupled with private lessons, I gained experience teaching high school percussion ensembles and I was a percussion instructor for marching bands. In my graduate studies, I had the amazing opportunity to teach collegiate level percussion ensembles and private lessons. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with materials from Mel Bay or Hal Leonard. Once a student has completed this, I begin to offer materials that are more specific to the musical genre that they have stated interest in. As a student progresses, I work to expose them to a variety of techniques with a focus on helping them to develop their own unique voice on their instrument. My hope is that, during this process, students would come to view growing in their musical gifts as an enjoyable and fulfilling process that continues throughout their life. Read More
Instruments: Drums
As a foundation, I start my beginner-level students with basic the basic understanding of rhythm patterns, dynamic control, and basic limb independence. I use Benny Greb's "The Language of Drumming" as it has proven to be a fun and effective learning tool for well over a decade. From there it's really dependent on the student and their learning style/pace. I try to never create a particular "method" that doesn't allow for the student's uniqueness to be taken into consideration. Read More

Every student is different, with different goals, different passions, and different backgrounds. So every student needs a different teaching method. I prefer to spend some time in the first lesson getting to know the student and his or her background to determine what specific methods work best for them. I like to put concepts into a musical application as soon as we can. Once the student has a grasp of the basic 4/4 pattern, I have them loop it while I accompany them on bass or guitar. Read More
