I really couldn't really get enough of the live music scene. I started playing in more groups, traveling the US and making records. I still do all of this today, having a collective 3 years of tour experience under my belt. I have made records with groups that have been released on several record labels, Including Paper+Plastick records, Vinyl Communique records and even Epitaph Records. With the studio experience and record releases also came sponsorships. Read More

My name is Alex L., and I've been playing the drums for 10 years with 3 years of teaching experience. I have taught independently and in academies, and currently, I play in an up-and-coming band called Walking Down Main based out of the Detroit metro area. I am deeply passionate about music and aspire to inspire others through teaching and performing. We have played all around the Detroit area in the last two years and have also performed in some cities in Ohio and looking forward to venturing out even further. Read More

I have three main books I use; these are my drum 'bibles'. Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Lawrence, and Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin. I like to teach fundamentals first, providing a strong basis with which to expand your repetoire. Then I like to emphasize song work. The best part of drumming in my opinion is playing with other instruments, and in addition to playing with recorded music, I encourage my students to find other musicians to practice and even perform with. I am a dedicated and focused musician who enjoys inspiring my students to pursue their dreams. In 2018, I graduated from the University of Houston with bachelors in Music Education and Percussion Performance. I am currently pursuing a masters degree at the University of Michigan in Percussion Performance. I have been lucky enough to play throughout the Houston area with many talented groups such as the Houston Symphony, Texas Music Festival, Musiqa, Aura Contemporary Ensemble, and the Music Box Theatre to name a few. I began teaching as a teenager when I was in Ann Arbor's psychedelic rock band SPROTON LAYER. I have taught friends and family off and on for many years. During the economic crash in 2009, I took a course on Teaching to understand different age groups and varied approaches in learning. Since then, I have taught steadily and found it very rewarding. One of the hardest things to get across to the Student is that the single most important thing to do is Play. Read More

More than anything music should be fun. The greatest musicians are the ones who enjoy playing music even when they're just practicing. I like to teach in a way that involves asking the student questions in order to get them to figure out the answer for themself, rather than just lecturing the whole time while they start daydreaming! This way the student is more involved in the learning process and it can make their time spent learning an instrument more worth it. Read More

For beginner students of any age, I would normally recommend Alfred's Drum Method Book 1, or Joel Rothman's Basic Drumming as they both cover a great intro to reading rythmic notation, proper grip forms, and snare drum method as they also start to incorporate rudiments. It often surprises people that the only purchases REQUIRED for starting to learn drums is: a practice pad, a book, and a pair of sticks (maybe a music stand). Read More
