My emphasis is on performance and motivating the student. I set goals for performance at the early stages of study whether it's for family and friends or at an open mic or in church. Without performance as a goal it's hard to motivate the student to practice. I analyze each student's individual learning style whether it's visual or auditory and find ways to help them learn faster and securely. If music as a whole is completely new, I tend to delay it, teaching by ear at first to establish technique fundamentals and aural skills. I prefer to see technical “problems” as something that is limiting their musical expression and that needs to be adjusted and reprogrammed, not as something the student is doing wrong. When I first start working with my voice students I like to learn where you are at, with any previous vocal training, what techniques you may or may not know, and where you are at musically with sight reading and theory. It is really important to have the fundamentals down in order to have a strong base to grow from and add musicality and stylization.
