For beginners, I like to provide a custom packet of mine in which I send to my students to not only assess their current aptitude on the instrument but the packet will serve as a their fundamental guide in order to stay focused on progressing even while learning new and exciting music of their own choosing. Moving forward with Advanced, Intermediate, and Professional level students, I like to provide each level student the same materials and recommend the same books but in terms of personal music goals and solo repertoire, I would tailor the works to that student's progress level and what they plan to accomplish during our time together. I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student,their level of ability and age that determine the course of study.It also depends on the instrument.Some instruments like piano,violin or viola,books are more practical because the music is notated.With most fretted instruments,music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments.
