I'm a big believer in personal goals and achievements. I like to ask my students what they hope to accomplish from their lessons, and tailor my lesson plan to meet their goals. My biggest concern is keeping the instrument fun for the student, and not letting it feel like a chore. First I need to know the type of music a student likes. Then I access their level and put together a plan to make them progress by teaching them a combination of; - techniques they need to know and master - exercises to help develop those techniques - songs based on their level and music taste - theory to understand the songwriting style - songwriting exercises to develop their artist side I also recommend music and videos, talk about gear, road experience, and anything else music related a student might be interested in. Typically, I begin with regimented learning. For guitar students, I use Hal Leonards Guitar Method 1. For voice students, I teach basic breathing exercises and fun, sustainable and memorable warm-ups. From there, I begin to prep them for their first solo performances. I offer studio-wide performance opportunities for new and experienced students to show off their skills! As they progress, I teach to their interests and needs. My teaching experience dates back to my school days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I began teaching guitar while in high school, and have had students consistently since 2002. During college I taught private guitar lessons both in Grand Rapids and Ypsilanti Michigan. After graduating I begam teaching guitar, audio engineering, and music business at Grand Rapids Community College. From 2009-2016 I was an instructor for a teen music program myself and other members of The Outer Vibe started called "Rock Camp." This was a week long summer camp which the students formed bands and practiced songs to play a concert at the end of the week. Read More
