 Drawing upon my education and experiences as both performer and teacher, I strive to relate my musical background to my students' learning experiences and progress. As each student comes with his or her individual musical wants and interests, student lessons are designed to meet these needs of a particular student. I have young students of ages 5 to 14 as well as students of upper ages. I focus on the student's preferred genre and songs, and I make theory work for those particular songs; i.e. I find common chord progressions, their related scales, and have students improvise using those scales [though I emphasize chord tones, syncopation and more ... equally, not just scales]). I am the epitome of patience, and I always seek to reassess a student's goals so as to hit the target as ideally on as possible (no sense in learning the complexity of jazz when punk rock is your only love!). I started as a very motivated child in the 2 nd grade and became a student of a famous professional performer. I loved Music and the Piano, studied violin, cello, and double bass. I performed often in local concerts, theatre, and went on a tour around the State of Michigan, during High School. If I notice a student has a peculiar method of approaching the fundamentals, but it isn't leading the down a bad path, I will help facilitate their unique approach while guiding them toward mastery of the concept. I feel the single most important thing about teaching music is to nurture the love of music that will sustain the student through the intermittent struggles with learning, rather than try to force a student down a "traditional" path.
