For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire.  Music is a very physical thing as well as a very abstract thing.  In my lessons, there will be kennistetic learning through movement as well as teaching through sensation. Using tools like Solfege it helps create muscle memory and tuning. Piano students will learn a wealth of theory knowledge, correct posture and fingering patterns. I will also encourage singing in my piano lessons to reaffirm the student's aural skills. The Alexander Technique is also something that my students will explore in our lessons. Read More

To begin, I will start with chords and scales to get a student used to understanding of notes and progressions. Next, I would go over theory and technique in order to blossom a stylistic way of playing for the student. Next, I would start with simple etudes and pieces for each student to learn and master. Afterwards, the student will choose a piece they want to learn. Finally, the student will decide the genre and style of later pieces they would like to learn. Read More

I don't tend to rely on any one method. I have quite a bit of material that I have personally developed over the years. I try to take each student as an individual with their own unique personality, likes and dislikes, and motivations. So I enjoy customizing a lesson plan that is as individual as each student. For my keyboard students, I like to start with like bit of music theory and learn to read musical notes and proceed to closing warm up exercise and solo repertoire according to their level and interests. For my voice students, I typically focus on their genre of music and teaching their goal in singing.
