I have taught private Drum Major lessons and high school clinics to young students across Western and Central North Carolina. During the summer of 2019, I was honored to be an instructor at the Lenoir-Rhyne Youth Summer Music Camp, where I taught musicianship/theory and woodwinds. I currently student teach for partial fulfillment for my Master's degree at Hickory High School (Hickory, NC). I then went on to work with intermediate level students and in college I worked with advanced as well as beginner voice students. I love sharing the passion and love I have for music with students. I teach harmony, rhythm, technique, melody, and basic sight reading by a two fold approach. First is to really feel into the music. This means learning to listen deeply with curiosity, intention, respect, and joy bringing the meaning of play into every aspect of learning. The second part is to begin with the basics of music theory by grounding fully into the fundamentals. Learning to work in forms that may seem like an alien language at first but when systematically approached with patience, dedication, and a spirit of playfulness and fun will open up and begin to reveal paths into learning and understanding that will greatly increase ones ability to engage in all musical forms. I taught elementary music for twenty plus years in the public school system (band, chorus, and classroom music). Additionally, I have taught private music lessons, traveling to my students’ homes and in my studio. I find being a teacher very rewarding because by imparting my musical knowledge, background, and experiences to my students, I can encourage and instill in them the same love of music that I was so fortunate to acquire. Self-reliance is going to be what carries each and every student throughout the course of their career with music.
