Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. For everyone, I like to talk with them and see their playing so I can get an idea of what needs to be worked on. Most of the beginners, I would teach them the basics of how to hold the violin to postures and tuning. I like to have a practice plan for the students to keep hem motivated, and if they are up for it, a plan to do a small competitions or concerts to have the student fully experience the joy of music and how it feels to be on the stage. Before anything, I find out what the goal of the lesson is. I always want to know what the students want, so I can plan around them. The lesson will always be about the student! After discussing the goal of the lesson, we will find repertoire, etudes, or other materials that either benefit the student technically, or will simply be enjoyable to the student. Since the goal of the student can either be anything, including playing professional recitals, or simply playing a Taylor Swift song from the radio, my priority will be that the student is enjoying their craft. I believe in the importance of holistic music pedagogy for students at every level. Musicianship requires technical proficiency, music theory training, music history study, and creativity. I prefer to craft unique courses of study for each of my students rather than using popular, one-size-fits-all approaches, such as the Suzuki Method. Though many of these methods have valuable pedagogical insights, I hope my students can have a deep engagement with music, art and creativity that goes beyond technical mastery, a goal that requires a greater flexibility than such methods provide.
