Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. Our music teachers understand that every student has different needs and abilities and therefore the lessons will be planned with that knowledge in mind.

For beginning students, I start with the Suzuki Method, a learning tool that I myself was taught as a beginner. Once the student has gained confidence and ease on the instrument, I delve into standard solo repertoire, beginning with Classical era pieces to work on tone, intonation, and bow control, then moving towards more Romantic Era pieces as well as technically advanced show pieces. Throughout all levels, I focus on body control and awareness to maintain relaxation, while still getting power. Read More

As a teacher, I have learned the last 4 years that you can't expect a student to just know something right away. It takes time, and students have to take it at their own pace. Sometimes, you have to differentiate instruction often, until the student starts to understand something. So, I find it is important to be student-centered and focus on the goals they can achieve, little at a time. I also find it important to create positive feedback and turn constructive feedback into a more positive direction, so it does not seem as tough. Read More

During my time at Oberlin, I took a certification class specifically about string pedagogy. I am very well versed in various methods of technique training for all instruments in the violin family. With beginners. I teach in a modified Suzuki method that includes music reading after a few months. In general I focus on technique and then add in the more fun musical gestures. Ben Gardner initially wanted to play the cello, but instead chose the violin to make the walk to school easier. He quickly fell in love with the instrument, and 16 years later he holds 2 degrees in Violin Performance and has appeared as a soloist and ensemble member across the Western United States in both Classical ensembles and in orchestras specializing in Historical Performance Practice, playing on historically authentic instruments.
